Otoplasty (Ear Correction)

How is it performed?

What age is the best for this surgery?

It is not customary to perform this procedure on children under the age of five, but, after this age, the surgery can be done for someone of any age.

How long is the operation?

The surgery will last from one to two hours. the operation is usually done with people completely asleep (under general anesthesia), but can be performed with local anesthesia.

What happens after surgery?

There is often not much pain, but there will be a dressing covering the ears.  It is designed to protect the ears and to reduce swelling, pain and bleeding.  It is usually changed by your doctor one to three days after surgery.  This will be replaced with a fresh dressing which will be worn 1-2 weeks.  The doctor will also discuss possibly wearing a light pressure dressing over the ears for several weeks while sleeping.

What are the risks?

Even with the best possible care, during or after the procedure, several complications may occur. These are important to mention:

  • significant pain after the operation due to the improper setting of the bandage
  • sensitivity to touch
  • reaction to suture material
  • difficulties in scar formation
  • post-operative bleeding
  • wound or ear infections
  • skin or cartilage deterioration due to the insufficient circulation

Our doctors always discuss with patients their goals and explain the range of changes that we can make. We try to prepare each individual or parent with what to expect. We want to be sure that we are on the same page. Each family should feel confident about the decision that they are making.
