Rhinoplasty (Nasal Correction)This is a surgical procedure, performed under general anesthesia, where the semi-soft cartilages of the lower half of the nose are altered to change the shape and position of the nasal tip. For patients with large noses, old fractures or humps/bumps along the ridge of their noses, the nasal bones are also altered by different techniques. The surgery usually requires about 2 hours.
After surgery you will have a packing inside your nose. This will be removed the next morning. There are sometimes black eyes, but most of the time this does not occur. There will also be a thin metal dressing across the top of your nose. This dressing is to reduce swelling and to protect the newly operated nose, such as a cast would protect a newly-set arm fracture. It is usually removed 5 days after surgery. |

How active can I expect to be after surgery? If you are working or studying, expect to miss about one week. The most uncomfortable part of the surgery is usually over after the first 24 hours. For the first week you will want to rest, but you do not need to be in bed. You may have soreness for which you will be taking pain pills and therefore should not drive or work and may not be able to study well. During the postoperative visit, you can discuss with your doctor when you can resume exercise. How old should I be before I think about a rhinoplasty? Usually it is best to be at least 16 years old. This is not a precise age requirement, but the reasoning is that one’s nose is almost fully grown by the end of puberty and therefore, after this age, surgery will not interfere with its growth. This precaution will increase the chance that your surgical result should be long-lasting. How can I know what I will look like? No surgeon or touched up photograph can know exactly how you will look after surgery. This is an individualized, complex process. The best way to judge if this is the right thing for you is to come to our office, see pictures of other patients and discuss your concerns with your doctor. How much does a rhinoplasty cost? There are 3 pieces in the billing for surgery. There is the amount charged by the surgeon, the anesthesiologists and the use of the room and supplies where the surgery occurs. The charge of the surgeon depends on how many steps are required to achieve the desired result. The total average cost is about $4000.00 and the final charges are settled after the surgery has been performed. Most procedures that change the outside appearance of the nose will not be paid for by your medical insurance. Do you have a payment plan? Our office only accepts full payment before the surgery will be performed, but we do provide you with the best available payment service for your convenience. Are you a plastic surgeon? Dr. Godley is a board-certified surgeon with 20 years of experience performing facial plastic surgery. A facial plastic surgeon has the advantage of understanding, not only to make a person look better, but also enhance function. In other words, not only will the nose look better after a rhinoplasty, but it should be easier to breath through the nose as well. |
